Issue: The VHIMA Scope of Services

SUMMARY

As the profession responsible for management of health information, the health care community must look to the health information professionals for analysis, synthesis and interpretation of data into meaningful information.

POSITION

The VHIMA and its members will provide:

• HIM services, that include but are not limited to, transcription, coding data analysis and interpretation, input into record content, forms design, accreditation and regulatory review and implementation, release of information, expertise regarding health information legal issues.
• Critical thinking, decision making, delegation and collaboration to support quality provision of health information functions.
• Environment for the promotion of technology to effectively manage information across the continuum of care with specific emphasis on technology related to development and implementation of the Computerized Patient Record.
• Mentoring and education for members and future professionals as a foundation piece for achievement of member and service excellence and information literacy.

ACTION STATEMENT

The VHIMA actively works to promote and provide the full scope of health information services by:

• Identifying and promoting the skills needed to effectively provide the scope of services through regional projects and workshops, actively developing and implementing education strategies.
• Strengthening alliances with health care organizations, vendors, schools, universities and legislative bodies to develop an integrated network to support the VHIMA's mission.
