Scholarship Policy
The applicant must be a resident or student of the state of Virginia. The applicant must demonstrate completion of at least one semester of course work or its equivalent and:
- Currently enrolled in a BS/BA accredited program that will lead to writing the RHIA examination OR
- Currently enrolled in an Associate accredited program that will lead to writing the RHIT examination OR
- Currently enrolled in the AHIMA Independent Study Program (ISP) OR
- Currently pursuing a Post-graduate degree in a health or technology related field and is an active member of AHIMA.
An overall minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required. The application and all required attachments must be completed and forwarded to the VHIMA Scholarship Chairman, postmarked prior to March 15th. The applicant should provide one letter of reference, from a professor, instructor or faculty advisor, who can provide information about the applicant's history, academic performance, technical skills, communication skills, leadership ability and professionalism, including strengths and opportunities for improvement in any of the aforementioned areas. The applicant must submit applicable official transcripts related to the current degree they are pursuing along with the completed application form. The applicant should provide supporting documentation of School, Community and Professional Organization involvement and should be included with the application. This may be in the form of a letter from an individual or certificate of participation in an activity.
Post-Graduate applicants only: A copy of a technical paper submitted for credit as part of academic course work or internship of which the student is the principal author. The subject of the paper should be relevant to Health Information Management or to the health care field.
