The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters Health System (CHKDHS) is seeking a full-time Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist-RN. The position offers flexible Monday-Friday scheduling (no weekends or major holidays). Flexible work hours available. Previous CDIS experience is not required; will train qualified candidates.
The Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist reports to Health Information Management Leadership and is responsible for reviewing medical records to assess and procure accurate and complete documentation of the patients’ diagnosis and procedures. Facilitates clinically appropriate physician/clinician documentation of all patient conditions, treatments and interventions to accurately reflect quality of care, severity of illness, and risk of morality to support correct coding, reimbursement and quality initiatives. Prepares trend and other reports for compliance audits and charge processes. Serves as a resource to hospital departments regarding compliance with billing regulations and trends in denials of services due to medical necessity or appropriateness of services. Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience, Education and Training Minimum: RN (BSN preferred) with a minimum of two to three years acute care clinical experience or RHIA with a minimum of two to three years acute inpatient care coding. Previous experience as a CDIS preferred, but not required. Will provide training to qualified candidates. Must have exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Highly developed organizational, critical thinking and analytical skills required. Experience with criteria-based chart review, such as Utilization Management, Case Management, Managed Care, or Quality Improvement preferred. Knowledge of healthcare regulations, including reimbursement systems, coding structure, and documentation requirements preferred. Ability to proactively form positive, collaborative relationships with interdisciplinary staff members. Must be competent with Microsoft Office, Internet, data entry and reporting software. Dependable and self-directed with the ability to successfully multitask and manage conflicting priorities. Must be credentialed through AHIMA as a Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP) or ACDIS as a Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) within three years of start date in this position.
Registered Nurse with two to three years acute care clinical experience; BSN preferred, but not required.
